Growers of trees, shrubs and hardy herbaceous perennial garden plants near Newport, Shropshire

Koelreuteria paniculata AGM

Every autumn is different; the tree which illustrates our website tree page was a brilliant red when we photographed it last October; this year it was lovely, but never got to red – the leaves turned orange, then bronze, then dropped, probably because we had a minus 3 degrees frost in mid-October before the leaves had managed to complete their seasonal progression.

Koelreuteria paniculata autumn 2012, before the frost!

K. paniculata (common names Golden rain tree, Varnish tree, Shrimp tree, Pride of India) is a super small garden tree; growing to maybe 25 feet tall, its leaves emerge tinged pink in spring; it has conspicuous panicles of small yellow flowers in summer, followed by bladder-like fruits. Autumn colours are spectacular (probably the best reason to grow it) but vary year to year!

It will grow in pretty much any reasonably well drained soil, and prefers full sun.
